Whelan: Leeds will sign ‘four international players’ after director reveal

Leeds United will sign at least “four international players” to build around the likes of Raphinha and Rodrigo.

That is the view of former Leeds striker Noel Whelan who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Whites would show their intent in the transfer market this summer.

Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear, speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, insisted the Whites have “enough ambition” to match that of their current stars amid interest from elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Leeds’ director of football Victor Orta issued a hands-off warning to any clubs sniffing around the likes of Raphinha ahead of the summer.

Whelan insisted the Whites needed to build around their top players and touted a handful of top-quality arrivals this summer.

“I think Leeds are going to be better off next season when you’ve got Raphinha there, you’ve got Rodrigo there and you’re adding four international players to the outfit we’ve already got,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“We’re competing now with the best of the best in our first season back. Imagine how strong we’re going to be next year when we add some more players to mix.

“That is how you keep players at clubs. You’ve got to show the ambition they desire as well. What they want from a football club and why they’ve come to a football club.

“This isn’t just a one-season wonder where we spend £60, £70, £80million. This is a progression. We’re trying to blueprint ourselves on Leicester.

“That is what we’re working on, to be like them up there challenging. To have the squad available to maybe head into the top-four like they’re doing over the progression of time.”
