Whelan: Leeds youngsters can save club millions amid Sky reveal

Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United’s youngsters can be like new signings for Marcelo Bielsa this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Whites ambassador said the elite talent emerging from the Under-23s could save the club millions.

As quoted by Sky Sports (19th August), Marcelo Bielsa revealed it is unlikely he will add to his squad before the transfer window shuts on August 31st.

Leeds have bolstered their ranks with the signings of Junior Firpo, Lewis Bate and Kristoffer Klaesson in this window, while Jack Harrison has joined on a permanent deal.

Whelan suggested the likes of Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood and Crysencio Summerville can have a big impact on the first team this year.

“Leeds United did some really good business last season,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“The one position we really needed to strengthen in was at left-back and we have got that in.

“From what we saw last season, the signings were exceptional and they fitted right into the squad of players.

“We have also seen the progression of the Under-23s. It’s been huge and hopefully they can prove that you don’t need to go out and splash the cash every season.

“Some of these young players we have paid money for and they will be like new signings when they are integrated into the first team this year. It is their time to shine and perhaps they can show that you don’t need to spend £15-20million on new signings.”
