Whelan ‘worried’ about Leeds after ‘huge’ Bamford news confirmed

Patrick Bamford’s continued injury lay-off is becoming a “huge worry” for Leeds United, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 28-year-old’s absence was glaring as the Yorkshire giants were defeated by Newcastle.

Leeds United, playing without an out-and-out striker, failed to convert from 13 shots as they were defeated 1-0 against the Magpies on Saturday (22 January).

Speaking post-match and quoted by Leeds Live, manager Marcelo Bielsa confirmed he “has his doubts” about whether Bamford can return for the Whites’ next fixture against Aston Villa on 9 February.

The England international has featured just once since late September.

Whelan suggested Leeds United are “in need of a goalscorer”.

“It’s been a real concern for the whole length of his time out,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“A natural centre-forward requires a different skillset altogether to the likes of Dan James or Tyler Roberts.

“You’re playing with your back to goal for 80% of the match.

“It’s a huge worry to still be without Patrick because we need a goalscorer – we saw that at the weekend.

“To not have a natural in that position, and having to rely on players like James, Roberts and Jack Harrison. It’s worrying, for me.”

Leeds United have impressive young strikers Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood on their books.

Gelhardt has already netted once and contributed three assists in eight Premier League games this season.

The Whites sit 15th in the top flight after missing the chance to record their third straight win on Saturday.

Bielsa’s side are also feeling the injury absence of club captain Liam Cooper and star midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
