Why Aston Villa should rival Birmingham after reported interest in PL winger
COMMENT By Derek Smithson
Aston Villa should consider matching Midlands rivals Birmingham in trying to sign Everton winger Aaron Lennon.
The Daily Mail claim that Birmingham are keen on securing a loan deal for the 30-year-old and that their manager Harry Redknapp is attempting to pull off the move for a player he knows well.
Lennon has not played for the Merseyside club since February and was admitted to hospital in May when detained under the Mental Health Act.
The 21-time capped England international has since returned to training with Everton and is keen to get back on the pitch.
Villa should consider rivalling Birmingham for Lennon’s signature as he could be a major success in the Championship if he could be persuaded to move.
The wide man could find it difficult to force his way into the starting XI under Ronald Koeman for the upcoming season, with the squad being seriously improved this summer.
A spell away from Goodison Park to experience regular football would be in his best interests and Steve Bruce should pounce.
Villa are expected to compete for automatic promotion next season and have a strong squad at their disposal, with the arrival of Chelsea legend John Terry a huge statement of intent.
However, they are perhaps still short in the wide areas and Lennon would bring some much-needed quality.
They have the likes of Andre Green, Albert Adomah and Jack Grealish at their disposal, but the Everton man would be an upgrade on their current options.
Lennon has spent the majority of his career in the Premier League and proven himself with spells at Tottenham, Everton and Leeds.
His pace and trickery is something that would light up the Championship, while also giving Villa some added class.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, they are set to loan out their 24-year-old as Charlton eye move.
