Why Tottenham should hijack reported £15m move for PL defender
COMMENT By Derek Smithson
Tottenham should consider hijacking Juventus’ reported move to sign Southampton defender Cedric Soares.
The Sun claim that Italian giants Juventus are preparing a £15million bid for the 25-year-old as they look to replace Dani Alves, who looks set join Manchester City.
It is understood that the Saints will be reluctant to sell as he still has three years remaining on his contract and is an important first teamer.
However, Spurs should chuck their name in the hat for the right-back and try secure a move for him in the summer.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side could be losing full-back Kyle Walker to Man City as Pep Guardiola’s side look to improve their squad drastically in the summer.
Cedric could be a perfect replacement for Spurs and the north London club should consider joining Juventus in their pursuit.
Spurs worked so effectively last season with two top-class right-back options in Walker and Kieran Trippier so must look for an established replacement if they lose the former.
Cedric has the quality to slot straight into the team and compete with Trippier for a starting XI position.
The defender has become an ever-present for Southampton since he joined in 2015 under Ronald Koeman and made 34 appearances across all competitions last season, chipping in with three assists.
He likes to support the attack down the right flank and that is something that would lend itself well to Pochettino’s offensive style.
Cedric is also renowned for his defensive discipline and has a strong balance to his game.
The Portugal international helped his nation with the European Championships in 2016 and was outstanding in that major tournament.
He is somewhat an underrated defender in the Premier League and Spurs could be securing a great deal if they snap him up for between the £15million-£20million bracket.
In other Tottenham transfer news, Borussia Monchengladbach are lining up a move for the club’s 23-year-old.
