Wolves controversy: Prices to rocket in devastating twist – Stefan Borson

Premier League season ticket prices are likely to undergo a consistent increase after Wolves and several other clubs have been criticised for next season’s price hike.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider American owners likely view the current price of top-flight season tickets as “ridiculous” and believe they need to charge more money.

Wolves came under fire after announcing a series of price increases for next season, including raising the cost of some tickets by 17 per cent and one category of under-14s tickets by 176 per cent from £105 to £290.

But the Premier League club have since scrapped the plans to increase ticket prices for under-14s and agreed to freeze the cost of adult tickets following a fan backlash.

A report has revealed 70 of the 92 Premier League and EFL clubs have raised their season ticket prices for next season.

Premier League prices to rise after Wolves controversy

Borson believes the American pricing style is becoming more prevalent within football as he expects season ticket prices to continue increasing moving forward.

“I think you have got the Americanisation of ticket prices first of all,” Borson told Football Insider.

“We have seen that even beyond football. If you look at the price of a gig or a festival ticket, they have gone through the roof as well. The Taylor Swift effect has come into all live events.

“You have got an increasing number of American owners and they will presumably look at the ticket prices and go, ‘Oh my god, this is ridiculous, you’ve got the best product in the world and we’re charging what we perceive to be peanuts for those tickets, we need to put the prices up’.

“Prices have been held steady for quite some time, particularly on the back of Covid.

“The reaction you get is very resistant. For a long time, prices have been held, but I think now you’re going to see a very consistent increase in prices going forward.

“The American-style pricing is coming in. Look at the Champions League final tickets. You’re talking about a pretty mediocre ticket at Wembley being £400.

“That is going to drip down through the game.”
