27-year-old should be axed: Three things we learned about Rangers from loss v Dundee
By Will Butcher
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Rangers’ 2-1 loss to Scottish Premiership side Dundee on Sunday.
Waghorn should be dropped
Former Leicester City hitman Martyn Waghorn did little to convince the Gers’ faithful on Sunday, as he looked apathetic in his performance. Scoring just once in nine games, the 27-year-old’s lack of goals has coincided with the Gers terrible recent form. His display proved fruitless once again, as the Ibrox club remain in turmoil and without a permanent manager. Caretaker boss Graeme Murty would be well advised to drop last season’s top scorer for Friday’s clash against Inverness.
Wallace leadership is crucial
Lee Wallace missed the loss to Paul Hartley’s side after sustaining a muscle injury in the last 10 minutes of the 2-1 win against Morton in the Scottish Cup. The Gers’ captain was replaced by Northern Ireland international Lee Hodson on the left side of defence, but former MK Dons defender Hodson failed to provide the kind of quality that Wallace possesses. As well as this, the Gers lacked a distinct amount of leadership despite starting Kenny Miller and Clint Hill, as fundamental decisions on the pitch and a lack of system was embarrassingly obvious during the loss.
New manager must be given summer war chest
Whoever the Gers top-ranking officials decide to bring in on a permanent basis in the Ibrox dugout, they must be given a substantial transfer budget to improve the quality on offer. Murty’s starting eleven struggled to offer any kind of incision or attacking bite, wil the defence looked brittle against Dundee’s attack. A new core is needed, with Rangers’ centre-backs and strikers falling way below par for a club that have won the top tier of Scottish football 54 times. Bringing in a handful of new players could prove crucial in Rangers attempts of clawing in Old Firm rivals Celtic.
