Agbonlahor shares verdict on Chelsea sealing big-money Robert Sanchez deal as summer plan revealed

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed a new first-choice goalkeeper should not be a “priority” signing for Chelsea this summer.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted deals for top targets David Raya or Robert Sanchez would be expensive and not necessarily an upgrade on Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Sources told this site on Monday (20 March) that Chelsea are working on signing a new first-choice goalkeeper this summer and have identified a number of targets.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (22 March) that the Blues are among the sides interested in Brighton’s Sanchez – while Brentford’s Raya is also on their shortlist.

Arrizabalaga is currently the first-choice shot-stopper under Graham Potter after taking the place of Edouard Mendy earlier this season.

The Spain international has kept 11 clean sheets in 27 appearances across all competitions this term.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Raya and Sanchez are good goalkeepers but they can make a few silly mistakes as well.

“I think I would keep Kepa and Mendy if I was in charge at Chelsea.

“They can do a job, and it certainly isn’t the weakest area of their squad.

“Kepa can sometimes get beaten by shots that you’d think he’d save, but I don’t think it’s a priority for them.

“Is Raya really that much better than him? He would cost a lot of money as Brentford are in a good position, and the same goes for Sanchez at Brighton.

“They should stick with what they’ve got.”
