Arsenal fans destroy Mikel Arteta after what he said live on air
Mikel Arteta has been called “pathetic” after the excuse he provided for his Arsenal team being beaten in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on Monday (7 January).
The Gunners comfortably lost 2-0 against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium following goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, putting them at a disadvantage heading into the second leg on 5 February.
However, the Arsenal boss, when speaking to BBC Sport straight after the match, pointed some of the blame on the match ball that was used.
He said: “It’s just different. It’s very different to a Premier League ball, and you have to adapt to that because it flies different.
“When you touch it the grip is very different as well, so you adapt to that.”
The competition opts to use a ball created by Puma, which is different from the Nike ball that teams play with in the Premier League.
Arsenal fans aren’t buying Mikel Arteta’s excuse
Arsenal supporters haven’t bought into the excuse that Arteta provided though, with some labelling him “pathetic.”
Other fans pointed out that the team kept passing it “backwards and sideways,” which was a bigger issue than the ball itself.
