Arsenal splurging on Viktor Gyokeres even more baffling as Mikel Arteta must sell big-name star

Viktor Gyokeres’ joining on big money during the summer has simply not worked out as many Arsenal supporters expected.

Despite hitting 15 goals across all competitions, fans up and down the Premier League have questioned if the Swedish international has what it takes to make it in England.

With 10 goals in the league this season, he is currently the Gunners’ leading goalscorer in the division, though that raises questions over the squad more than it does anything else.

Arsenal already have summer plans, but some of those have been thrown into uncertainty due to the latest financial update emerging from the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta greeted with tough transfer decisions in the summer

According to The Telegraph (5 March), discussions are taking place over which first-team player will be sold in the summer to, essentially, balance the books in North London.

Mikel Arteta’s side spent a total of £268million in fees after the end of the most recent financial year, with the likes of Ethan Nwaneri, Lewis Myles-Skelly and Martin Odegaard on the chopping block.

There is a real risk that the Gunners could lose a prized academy graduate, such as Nwaneri, who is currently on loan at Marseille, or even their captain, Odegaard.

While Odegaard has not had his best season, he could be vital to the changes that could be expected at the Emirates over the next few seasons, given his experience and knowledge.

Arsenal could now regret ever signing Viktor Gyokeres

Arteta might not have had to choose between some of his most loyal players had the Gunners invested their money properly.

After splashing £55million, plus £8.6million in add-ons, on the Sporting CP striker, who failed to make it in England previously, the decision could backfire for the team aiming for multiple titles.

To put that into context, Man City signed Erling Haaland for a standard £51.2million, albeit without the add-ons, but since Gyokeres’ arrival, the Norwegian star has netted 29 times in all competitions.

There is a real gulf in class between the two, and Gyokeres has failed to deliver when it matters most.

Why did Arsenal put so much trust in the player? He might come good in his second season, but right now, it seems like the wrong decision.
