Report: Aston Villa weighing up move for 77-time international, could be available at £2.5m

By Harvey Byrne

Aston Villa are weighing up a move for Hull right-back Ahmed Elmohamady, who previously worked under Steve Bruce at the Tigers, according to a report.

The Birmingham Mail have claimed that the experienced boss is in the market for a new wide player this summer and that Villa are one of the clubs interested in taking the 29-year-old Egyptian right sided player.

The 77-time capped international has long been linked with a move to the Midlands giants since the appointment of Bruce last year and in May the Daily Star also reported that he was eyeing his former attacker.

Now, the Birmingham Mail report details that Elmohamady, who has two years remaining on his contract at Hull could cost around £2.5million, which would be short change to owner Tony Xia in comparison to what he was spending last summer.

Aston Villa have not yet made a signing this summer as they aim to win promotion to the Premier League, but they could see Elmohamady, who played 33 times himself in the English top-flight as a possible addition.

Football Insider verdict:

Aston Villa are already well covered in the right-back position with each of James Bree, Alan Hutton and Ritchie De Laet. However, Elmohamady also boasts versatility and he also played in a number of matches in the right midfield role alongside his right-back position in the last campaign. Now, Aston Villa only have Albert Adomah as their current natural right-winger and Bruce will need to bolster his squad further if he is to help the club win promotion over a 46-game season. He knows Elmohamady well and the Egyptian himself boasts a lot of experience, meaning this could be a smart signing for Aston Villa.
