BBC pundit: This Aston Villa January signing will start getting the hump, slams greedy player
By Amir Mir
BBC pundit Garry Thompson has stated that Aston Villa January signing Scott Hogan will start getting the “hump” if the “greedy” Jonathan Kodjia doesn’t start passing him the ball.
Villa purchased striker Hogan from Championship rivals Brentford on Deadline Day and the former Bees man has played two games for his new side.
During those matches against Nottingham Fores and Ipswich, he has failed to get on the score sheet as Steve Bruce’s side have failed to pick up a single point.
The Midlands club lost their last encounter 1-0 at home against Mick McCarthy’s men and Kodjia wasted a number of good opportunities when playing alongside Hogan.
Former Villa striker Thompson believes Hogan will stop making runs if his teammates, in particular, Kodjia, don’t start providing him the deserved service.
“I think Kodjia has been greedy,” Thompson told BBC Radio West Midlands. “Over the past six months, he has been used to pulling us out of the fire, nicking a goal, he now has to learn and learn quickly to play with Hogan.
“Hogan as soon as he came, he’ll run behind people, he will cause you problems, he’ll stretch the player, but he will also need someone to give him the ball from time to time. If people keep turning away from him as a centre-forward, he will get the hump with it.
“How much fight he has got, how much willingness he has got, if he feels, they are not giving me the ball – he will stop making runs. Him and Kodjia need to get a relationship going. ”
Villa take on Barnsley in front of their own supporters on Tuesday evening, looking to end a three-game losing streak.
Both Hogan and Kodjia have scored one goal between them since his move last month as they will be looking to build upon their strike partnership.
Ivory Coast international Kodjia was purchased for big money during the summer window when Bruce’s predecessor, Roberto Di Matteo, signed the attacker from Bristol City.
He has scored ten goals since his move from Lee Johnson’s men and is set to come up against his former side on February 28.
