Benitez confirms Newcastle 24-year-old will miss start of PL season
By Danny Wright
Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has confirmed that right-back DeAndre Yedlin will be out for up to three weeks with an injury.
The 24-year-old limped off the pitch in the Magpies’ 2-1 loss to Mainz on Saturday with a hamstring injury and it appears that he is set for yet another spell on the sidelines.
Since joining Newcastle last summer, Yedlin has found himself in and out of Benitez’s first-team plans due to injuries and he has now been ruled out of the Premier League season opener against Tottenham at St. James’ Park next Sunday.
As he is set to miss a maximum of three weeks, the 46-times USA international may also be forced to sit out of the trip to Huddersfield, but could be back in time for the home clash with West Ham.
Newcastle are well-stocked in the right-back position and have Jesus Gamez and new signing Javier Manquillio who can also play in the role.
However it is no doubt a major blow for Yedlin, who will surely have hoped to have hit the ground running against his former employers Spurs next week.
“We think it’s two or three weeks that he will be out,” said Benitez on Yedlin’s injury, as quoted by the Newcastle Chronicle in their live transfer blog on Thursday [07:19am].
Yedlin earned 32 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies last season, scoring one goal and supplying six assists as his side went on to lift the Championship title.
In other Newcastle news, this striker has been confirmed to have left the Magpies for another English club.
