Benitez delivers blunt verdict on Newcastle summer transfers

By Harry Sykes

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has said that the summer transfer market is “crazy” and that the Magpies are doing all they can to secure deals.

This comes after reports that said Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez was getting frustrated at the lack of business Newcastle had done over the summer.

The Mail claimed the Spanish boss was unhappy at Newcastle’s “poor business”, after losing out on deals for Tammy Abraham and Will Caballero.

Now, Benitez has come out and said that the transfer market is tough due to inflated prices because of the Premier League’s huge TV deal.

His blunt assessment of the situation will not inspire Newcastle fans that the club is willing to pay current prices for top players.

Talking at Newcastle’s 1892 Foundation Cup event, as quoted by the Chronicle, Benitez said: “It’s not easy for a lot of teams because the market is a little bit crazy. We have to try to do our best.

“The top sides have a lot of money. The other teams are spending too, but we will see what we can do.”

The Chronicle claim the £50m valuation of Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson prove the current climate of the UK transfer market.

Benitez also admitted that it was tough trying to sort deals out while also training the current crop of players.

Asked how much he was working Benitez said, “All the time. You have to be on the phone and you are training (at the same time).”

So far, Benitez has only managed to secure two deals this summer, signing Christian Atsu on a permanent deal from Chelsea and Florian Lejeune from Eibar.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies have been installed as favourites to sign this midfielder with PL experience.
