Campbell tips Howe-like Fonseca to thrive at Celtic after reported approach and ‘big talk’

Paulo Fonseca is cut from the same cloth as Eddie Howe and could ‘do a job’ at Celtic.

That’s according to former Arsenal hitman Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Fonseca’s links with Celtic.

According to the Transfer Window Podcast, Celtic have been approached by Fonseca’s representatives after he expressed an interest in replacing Neil Lennon.

Last week, it was announced that Fonseca, 48, will leave his role as Roma manager at the end of the season.

He will be replaced by Jose Mourinho after leading the Italian side to the Europa League semi-finals this season.

He is now looking for a new job having previously managed Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk.

As revealed by Football Insider last month, the door is open for Celtic to appoint Howe after Crystal Palace made Sean Dyche their number one choice to replace Roy Hodgson.

Campbell claims Fonseca is a similar manager to Howe and tipped him to succeed if he takes the reigns at Parkhead.

“Fonseca is a good manager,” Campbell told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“There was big talk about him coming to the Premier League and Celtic a few years ago. That didn’t work out and he went to Roma instead.

“He is definitely a manager who could do a job at Celtic but Eddie Howe could as well.

“They both know their football and work well with younger players. That Shakhtar team he had [Fonseca] was really good, that’s how he made his name.”

Fonseca was born in Mozambique and played as a centre back during his playing career.

John Kennedy remains in charge of Celtic with the club set to face St Johnstone on Wednesday.

In other news, pundit claims Celtic may have already appointed new manager.
