After top-flight ace Rangers comments and tweet, Mark Allen must re-sign him on free this summer
Rangers can take advantage of Stoke getting relegated this season and help to pick apart the carcass.
One player in particular could form the backbone of Graeme Murty’s side next season and help bridge the gap between Rangers and Celtic.
Charlie Adam started his senior career at Rangers after making the switch from the Dundee youth set-up.
He spent a few periods out on loan before being sold to Blackpool in August 2009 for a fee of around £500k.
From Blackpool he made the somewhat surprising move to Liverpool where his stock began to rise and he’s been a stalwart at Stoke for almost the past six years.
The former Scotland international has done it all, with Champions League experience, a Scottish title with Rangers and a league cup with Liverpool.
He might be in the twilight years of his career at 32 but he’s still doing a job for Stoke, although he’s been a bit-part player this season.
And, with his contract due to expire in the summer, and Stoke highly likely to get relegated, it would seem like the perfect time to bring his career full circle and enjoy one last move to Rangers.
Even if Stoke don’t get relegated it looks like his playing time at the bet365 Stadium is coming to an end.
He would bring experience and the odd spectacular goal – and he obviously still has a keen interest in the club.
Just last October he tweeted that Rangers needed more British players as soon as possible.
Adams got his wish over the January transfer window, with players like Sean Goss, Russell Martin, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings all joining the club.
Graeme Murty needs a figure to bind them all together and Adam could be that man – Mark Allen must make a deal for him a priority this summer.
He’s done his job in the Premier League and it’s unlikely any club will make him an offer to stay in the English top flight.
But he can help bring the glory days back to Ibrox and he’s already admitted that he wouldn’t be adverse to a move back north of the border.
Talking to the Herald back in May last year Adam said: “Listen, Rangers is a wonderful club and I had a great time there. I left because I felt it was right for my career and it has been. But the club still has 50,000 for every home game. The battle now is to try close the gap and you’re going to have to improve on the players they have. So players are going to be linked there.
“My son is in Scotland but he is 10 and we’ve been alright with that. I am happy at Stoke but you never know what can happen in football. Scotland is always an option but I am happy where I am.”
