Chelsea ‘will see whether their transfer strategy has worked’ after record-breaking update

Chelsea will have to look at selling players in the summer transfer window and change their transfer strategy to adapt to their financial situation.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after Chelsea made a loss of £355million last season.

The annual loss was the highest ever recorded by an English football club, with expenses continuing to increase, whilst they have the most expensively assembled squad at £1.52billion.

Chelsea’s unstable financial position, with revenue failing to keep up with costs, means the club are expected to be active in the summer transfer window to generate funds.

Chelsea ‘will be looking to sell players’ in summer window

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Chelsea will still buy players in the summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the club will be looking to sell players on for profit.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It doesn’t mean to say they’re not going to buy. I think they will.

“But they’re going to, I think, we’re going to see a flight to quality. Whereas before, they had a flight to youth. If you look at it, if you follow what I’m saying, they had a lot of development players.

“Now I think they’re going to see if their strategy has worked, and can they sell those players they bought younger? Can they sell them now at a higher price? We’ve got to see. And this is where the market’s going to test themselves. And will there be enough buyers out there?”

Chelsea to raid Premier League rivals for new goalkeeper

Sources have told Football Insider that Chelsea hold an interest in Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs ahead of a potential summer move.

Sunderland are expecting bids for their number one, and have valued the 23-year-old at £50million, with Liverpool and Manchester City among the clubs keeping tabs on the shot stopper.

Roefs has impressed in-between the sticks on Sunderland’s return to the top flight, with the Dutchman having kept eight clean sheets in 28 Premier League matches this season.
