Club have £21m bid rejected for 24-year-old long-term Tottenham target – report
By Harvey Byrne
West Brom have had a bid thought to be worth £21million rejected by Middlesbrough for defender Ben Gibson, according to a report.
The Mail have detailed on their website that the Midlands club have tabled a bid worth an initial £18million plus £3million on add-ons.
It is thought that the 24-year-old is also a long-standing target of Tottenham, but Muairicio Pochettino’s team will not be making a move unless they decide to let the £20million valued Kevin Wimmer leave, who is attracting both Southampton and West Brom.
Middlesbrough are also said to be determined to only sell star Gibson to a top six side, which would mean they would be open to selling to Spurs.
The centre-back is still contracted to the north east side until 2021 and despite suffering relegation with Boro in the last campaign he impressed, playing 41 matches in all competitions while even being called up to the senior England team.
Football Insider verdict:
Gibson is a talented centre-back, but at his expected cost then Tottenham would be hoping to bring in an immediate starter and Gibson simply is not that with both Toby Alderweirled and Jan Vertonghen in the squad. The centre-back area is also not an area of great concern for Spurs at this moment in time and they have boasted the best defensive record for the last couple of seasons. Tottenham do have to bring in some new first team players this summer, but for £20million-plus they should avoid spending it on Gibson.
