Marco Negri gives humorous advice to Rangers summer signing

By James Black

Former Rangers striker Marco Negri hopes that the prolific Alfredo Morelos can double his own incredible Ibrox goals tally but offered the 21-year-old some humorous advice – stay away from squash courts.

Negri scored a phenomenal 23 goals in his first ten league games for the Gers in 1997 before suffering an eye injury during a game of squash with fellow Rangers player Sergio Porrini.

The injury detached Negri’s retina and led to a catalogue of injuries that effectively ended his Rangers career before it had really started.

Responding to a fan on Facebook asking where he felt Morelos could improve his game, Negri admitted he wanted to see Morelos smash his record to help Rangers return to the top of the Scottish Premiership table – and made the light-hearted nod to his own Ibrox past.

“He is doing very well and when a striker start so well, his confidence get stronger and stronger and it is so important.” Negri said in the Facebook post.

“I wish him to do the double of my goals and help Rangers go back where they belong.

“But stay away from the squash court!”

Morelos has scored eight times since his £1million move from Finnish side HJK Helsinki and the Colombian has quickly won over fans with his hard-working displays and clinical finishing in front of goal.

Last season’s top scorer Martyn Waghorn ended the campaign with 16 goals across all competitions.

Aston Villa have already been reported to have shown an interest in luring Morelos away from Ibrox just three months after he arrived at the Glasgow club in the summer transfer window.

Rangers fans will be hoping that Morelos can continue his rich vein of goal-scoring form on Saturday lunchtime when Celtic visit Ibrox in the first Old Firm clash of the season with Rangers currently trailing their bitter rivals by five points in the Scottish Premiership.
