‘He can’t wait’ – Exclusive: Bent makes Ashley claim after key Newcastle takeover update

Darren Bent does not believe Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley will have any regrets during his 13 years in charge of the club.

The former Sunderland and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims the Sports Direct supremo will just be focused on getting himself out of St James’ Park with a prospective takeover in place.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Saudi-backed bid is progressing smoothly but there is still plenty of paperwork to submit before the deal is completed.

With a deal nearing completion, Bent suggests that there is little, if anything, that Ashley – who recently ranked as the 75th wealthiest person in Britain in the Sunday Times Rich List – would have done differently ahead of his impending exit.

Bent told Football Insider: “I don’t think he’ll have any regrets but I’m sure he’ll be glad when it’s over.

“He’s taken a lot of stick and there’s only so much people can take. When you’re taking that much stick, it can be hard.

“I’m sure with the way that he’s conducted himself at times, he might think and feel he could have done a little bit better but other than that, I just think he can’t wait to get it over the line.”

The British businessman has been vilified by the St James’ Park faithful for a series of unpopular and controversial decisions, such as renaming the stadium and appointing Joe Kinnear as manager.

On the pitch, Newcastle have suffered two relegations during Ashley’s time in charge, while they currently sit 13th in the Premier League table.

In other Newcastle United news, a Premier League star has been tipped to jump at the chance to join the Magpies this summer.
