Advanced talks: Liverpool close to international defender deal after transfer twist – reports

By Matt Bullin

Liverpool are in “advanced talks” to sign Hull City defender Andrew Robertson, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo claims a deal for the the 23-year-old left-back is close, but it will not be completed in time for the player to fly to Hong Kong with the Reds on Sunday.

It is said Robertson’s arrival at Anfield will likely mean the end for Alberto Moreno’s Liverpool career.

The report states that Reds manager Jurgen Klopp identified the 15-time Scotland international as a target after missing out on Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy.

This comes after the Liverpool Echo previously reported that in a transfer twist, Liverpool’s interest in the Hull full-back had cooled down following the Mirror claiming that the deal was all but done, and was set to be announced on July 1.

Robertson was a mainstay in Hull’s back line last term, making 39 appearances across all competitions.

The left-back provided three assists and scored one goal, but his best efforts were not enough to stop the club being relegated to the Championship.

He joined the Tigers in the summer of 2014 in a £3million, and he has since played 115 league and cup games for the club.

Football Insider verdict

Liverpool’s left-back issue is a well-documented one, and Robertson would go a long way to solving the problem. Although he was relegated with Hull last season, the 23-year-old was one of the club’s top performers and he drew several other potential suitors through his efforts as well. However, Robertson’s real strength is attacking from the left, not in his defensive attributes which could be an issue for the Reds. If he does sign it would most likely signal Moreno’s departure from Anfield, which would leave him as the club’s only natural left-back, so there is no doubt he would get a chance to impress.
