Liverpool make double Scandinavia move – ‘this is a very positive sign’

Liverpool have capitalised on their Premier League success this season with the opening of a new club store in Copenhagen.

Former Reds defender Daniel Agger cut the ribbon in Denmark, meaning the Merseyside club now have 19 club shops worldwide – more than any other football or US sport franchise.

Liverpool, who joined Man United on 20 English top-flight titles this season, are also set to open their first store in Norway later this year.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has urged Liverpool to go even further as they look to monetise overseas supporters.

Liverpool told to expand overseas presence

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Liverpool should use player visits and new technology to make their international stores “little embassies” for the club.

The Reds are the most-followed Premier League team in Scandinavia, with the club claiming they have “more than two million passionate fans” in the region.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s their 19th store, including a few others internationally as well.

“They’re going to be opening up another one in Norway too.

“This is Liverpool penetrating internationally, they’re monetising the fans overseas.

“I campaigned with Richard Scudamore to have Premier League shops opened globally, which would be a great platform for clubs to sell merchandise.

“But the big clubs wanted to do it themselves, even though everybody would’ve benefited.

“For Liverpool, Scandinavia has been a very fertile ground. They are by far the most supported club out there.

“I’m sure the new store will do well. The problem will be how you fill it with fans all year round, not just for Christmas.

“This is where they have to hold events to make them almost like little embassies, working with pubs and restaurants, get more player visits, using new technology – all to penetrate these regions.

“Having a physical asset like a shop as a centre is a big sign for the fans that they are recognised and supported. It’s a very positive sign for Liverpool.”
