Manquillo mocks Sunderland in first Newcastle interview after agreeing terms
By Danny Wright
Newcastle’s latest recruit Javier Manquillo has wasted no time in mocking Sunderland after agreeing terms with the Tynesiders.
The 23-year-old spent last season on loan with the Black Cats as they suffered relegation from the Premier League, but now suggests that his former side are nowhere as big as the Magpies.
Manqullio, like Jack Colback before him, has opted to switch the red and white stripes for the black and white ones of Newcastle, and has made it clear who he thinks the biggest club in the Tyne-Wear derby is.
“More recently I played for Sunderland, but now I’ve got the opportunity to join this club, the biggest club in the North-East,” the full-back said in his first interview on the Magpies’ official website, as quoted by Newcastle Chronicle’s chief sports writer Lee Ryder on his personal Twitter account.
Manquillo became Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer on Friday after it was announced that he had penned a three-year deal with the Tynesiders.
He joins Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune and Jacob Murphy in signing up for the Magpies, who will be back in the Premier League next season following their successful title-winning campaign in the Championship.
The Spanish full-back spent the whole of last season on loan with Sunderland, making 22 appearances and scoring one goal across all competitions for Sunderland last season as they were relegated.
His solitary goal came when he managed to score on the final day of the campaign in a 5-1 mauling at the hands of champions Chelsea.
In other Newcastle news, the Magpies are set to swoop for this international striker after he rejected a London club.
