Murphy tipped by pundit to ‘walk into Rangers starting XI’ after latest on Ibrox move

Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy would excel under the guidance of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

That is the view of Gerrard’s former England teammate Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of the Light Blues signing the 26-year-old in the summer transfer window.

The Chronicle claim the Glasgow giants have made a number of “enquiries” about the Englishman who is under contract at St. James’ Park until June 2022.

However, he reportedly wants to remain at the club he has supported all his life.

Football Insider revealed last month that Newcastle are keen to tie Murphy down to a new deal amid interest from Rangers, Watford and Southampton.

He has contributed three goals and three assists in 28 appearances in the 2020-21 campaign, having been used as a right wing-back and a right winger.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Murphy should consider a move to Ibrox, Robinson said: “Would Rangers fans be that excited by Murphy?

“He would be a smart addition but I don’t think he would be a great addition. He has done well at Newcastle in a team that has struggled this season.

“I think Steven Gerrard could develop him and improve him though. He could help him realise his potential.

“While I say he would not be an exciting signing, he would certainly strengthen their starting XI and walk straight in. Newcastle will want to keep hold of him though.”

In other news, Rangers have been tipped to swoop for an exit-bound Leeds player after his Ibrox confession.
