Newcastle 23-year-old to undergo double operation after playing through pain – report
By Dominic Toner
Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles will undergo a hernia surgery, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the 23-year-old has been playing through the pain for four months and is now set for a double hernia operation.
It is understood that Rafael Benitez kept the situation quiet, but the club’s medical staff were aware of the problem.
The report details that the Magpies captain went to see a specialist after they secured promotion back to the Premier League and it was urged he needed immediate attention.
Lascelles will miss the final game of the Championship season against Barnsley as his side try to pip Brighton to the league title, but is expected to recover in time for the start of next season.
Lascelles has been determined to help his side return to the top-flight and has been an ever-present in Rafael Benitez’s starting line-up.
The centre-back has made 47 appearances across all competitions and formed a solid partnership alongside teammate Ciaran Clark.
He was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year after his solid performances in the defence and he has thrived on being the club’s captain.
Several Newcastle fans have questioned Lascelles’ form in recent months and his pain barrier could prove a great explanation, with several of them feeling Clark was the underrated star in defence.
Lascelles showed his true determination to achieve promotion by playing through the pain and will now receive the attention he needs.
