Tim Sherwood has blasted the Newcastle supporters for their current view of controversial owner Mike Ashley.

The former Aston Villa boss stated there hasn’t been an “Ashley out” banner all season in the Championship because they are now winning football matches.

Sherwood called the St James’ Park faithful as “fickle” because he believes it is the “same owner” behaving in the “same manner”.

Newcastle recently earned promotion back to the Premier League under the guidance of Rafa Benitez, who could win the Championship title on the last day of the season.

However, Sherwood believes that is papering over the cracks as he issued this brutal attack on the fans for their current stand point on their owner.

“We haven’t seen an ‘Ashley out’ banner all season,” Sherwood told beIN Sport, as quoted by the Chronicle. “They are winning football matches – that’s how fickle football fans can be. It’s the same owner.

“He’s behaving in the same manner but they are winning football matches so they’re all happy. They need to look at themselves.

“It’s the same owner they wanted out and they were protesting to get out of their football club because the team was getting beaten. Sometimes they have to look a bit deeper than that.”

Ashley has been a controversial figure at the club for many years, with supporters calling for him to sell up in recent seasons.

Newcastle have suffered relegation on two occasions under his ownership as fans believe the problems at the club lie at his door.

In recent years, the Magpies have constantly flirted with relegation in the top tier of English football, with many fans expecting them, at the very least, to challenge for Europe.

Now, they will make a return to the promise land where the spotlight will be on how ambitious the club will be during the summer transfer window in what type of funds they back Benitz with.

In other Newcastle news, Paul Merson has made a worrying claim about Rafa Benitez’ future at the club.
