Newcastle agree eight-figure fee for 22-year-old attacker – reliable journalist
By Derek Smithson
Newcastle have reached an agreement with Norwich over a price for Jacob Murphy, according to a reliable journalist.
Telegraph correspondent John Percy claimed on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies have agreed a £12.5million fee with the Championship club.
Rafael Benitez’s side have been chasing the 22-year-old winger in the summer window as they look to bring in some new faces at St James’ Park for their Premier League return.
Murphy impressed in the summer with England’s Under-21s side at the European Championships and also enjoyed a good spell last season with Norwich.
The right winger made 40 appearances across all competitions for the Canaries, scoring nine goals and supplying eight assists in return.
He is yet to make a senior appearance in the Premier League during his career, but Newcastle are showing faith in the youngster and clearly believe he has huge potential to fulfil.
Football Insider verdict:
Newcastle are being forced to shell out a huge £12.5million sum for Murphy’s signature and the fact that he is English has boosted Norwich’s valuation. The 22-year-old was in great form last season in the Championship and carried that form on to the Under-21 international stage. He has shown in glimpses his quality and his ability to beat a man is something that should really excite Magpies fans. However, he can be guilty of inconsistent patches and is going to have to deal with a big pressure if his big-money deal to St James’ Park is confirmed. He will have every chance of reaching his potential though under the tutelage of manager Benitez, who looks prepared to take a gamble on Murphy.
In other Newcastle transfer news, they are interested in signing a 27-year-old attacker from La Liga.
