‘Worth at least £50m’, ‘Cult hero status’ – Newcastle fans react to reported striker departure
By Russell Edge
Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to pay credit to striker Daryl Murphy after a transfer update seemed to signal his departure from the club.
The Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder has reported on his personal Twitter account that Nottingham Forest are leading the way for the 34-year-old’s signing with a £2million bid:
Murphy has only spent a year at St James’ Park, having joined from Ipswich in a £3million move last summer, but his hard work ethic and important goals have endeared him to the Newcastle faithful.
The Toon Army took to social media to pay credit to the Republic of Ireland international, with Football Insider rounding up a selection of the best messages on Twitter:
The 25-cap international started just 11 out of the 19 Championship games he appeared in last season, but still managed to bag five goals as they managed to secure both promotion and the Championship title.
The veteran might have seen more action had it not been for a calf injury, which saw him sit out no less than 13 games.
He is a proven goal scorer in the second tier, with 274 appearances, 82 goals and 43 assists under his belt, the majority coming during his time with the Tractor Boys.
His proposed move to Nottingham forest could see him step into the shoes of Britt Assombalonga, who joined recently relegated Middlesbrough in a £15million move.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies are lining up a move for an international defender set to be offloaded by a fellow Premier League side.
