Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Mitrovic display against Oxford

By Alex Stevens

Aleksandar Mitrovic was recalled to the Newcastle team for their humiliating FA Cup defeat to Oxford on Saturday – and fans took to Twitter to pan his display.

The Serbia international started in a much-changed side as Rafael Benitez rotated his side in the third-round clash at the Kassam Stadium.

But the manager’s selection completely backfired with the League One side securing a notable 3-0 win to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in 23 years.

Mitrovic was among many Newcastle players who had a poor performance and missed a golden chance to level the scores when his penalty was saved low down by Oxford goalkeeper Simon Eastwood.

Supporters were immensely frustrated by the performance of the forward and those who slammed him drowned out those who claimed he should have been cut some slack on his return after injury.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Mitrovic has had a difficult season following Newcastle’s demotion to the Championship and has had to play second fiddle for most of the campaign to the division’s top scorer Dwight Gayle.

The 22-year-old, who has scored five goals from 18 matches this season, has often borne the brunt of supporters’ criticism.

In other Newcastle news, Daryl Murphy has spoken about his long-term future with the club.
