Newcastle fans react on Twitter to reported interest in Championship winger

By Derek Smithson

Newcastle are reportedly eyeing a move for Norwich winger Jacob Murphy – and the club’s supporters are divided on Twitter about whether they want him at St James’ Park.

The Chronicle claim that scout Steve Nickson is watching the wide man perform for England at the Under-21s European Championships.

It is understood that they are looking at securing an £8million deal for the 22-year-old, but it’s believed Norwich would want £12million in any potential deal.

The report details that Rafael Benitez also has Leicester pair Tom Lawrence and Demarai Gary on a shortlist of potential new wingers.

Murphy has just enjoyed a strong season in the Championship with the Canaries and made his breakthrough into their first team.

The right winger has experienced several loan moves as a youngster, but was a crucial member of the Norwich senior squad last season.

He made 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals and supplying eight assists in return.

Some Newcastle fans feel that Murphy is ready to make the step up to the Premier League for the first time in his career, while others strongly disagree and feel he is overpriced.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Murphy is currently on international duty with the young Lions and has helped them reach a semi-final against Germany on Tuesday.

The youngster’s good form at Carrow Road has continued into the major tournament and he is now being tipped to brace the Premier League.

He has a twin brother Josh Murphy who also plays as a winger for Norwich and his sibling has in fact been ahead of him in development during their short careers so far.

He has already made 60 senior appearances for Norwich and is viewed by some fans as the better player, but Jacob’s performances in the past 12 months have seen his reputation rise.

In other Newcastle transfer news, they have lowered their asking price for their first teamer.
