‘I don’t know what is going to happen’ – Newcastle striker speaks out after reported £16m offer

By Russell Edge

Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has said that he does not know whether he will be at the club come the end of the summer transfer market.

The Serbian international has been heavily linked with a move away from Tyneside this summer, with Foot Mercato reporting that Newcastle had offered the 22-year-old to Olympique Lyonnais for £16million.

He is set to be just one of three centre forward options available to manager Rafael Benitez, with Daryl Murphy’s imminent departure leaving just Mitrovic, last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle and Spanish attacker Ayoze Perez.

However, the 27-times international admits that his future is still in doubt, although insists he will be working as hard as he can to secure a place in the starting XI at St James’ Park.

He told the Chronicle: “At the moment I am here and I will do everything to work hard like I always do.

“Sometimes that’s enough, sometimes it’s not. We will see what has happened by the end of the transfer window.

“I don’t know what is going to happen at the end.”

Mitrovic has endured a difficult time since arriving in England from Belgian side Anderlecht in the summer of 2015.

He has managed to score just 15 goals in 65 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle, while last season saw him hit the back of the net just four times in the Championship as the Magpies secured both promotion and the second tier title.

The powerful forward also has 27 caps for Serbia, having made his debut back in 2013, and has managed to net eight times for his country.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies are lining up a move for a young Championship defender.
