Newcastle player ratings v Derby: Senior player is 5/10

By Amir Mir

Football Insider rates the Newcastle players out of ten following their 1-0 win against Derby in the Championship on Saturday afternoon at St James’ Park.

Karl Darlow 6 – Made the saves when required but still needs to improve his decision-making and be more confident when dealing with crosses.

DeAndre Yedlin 8 – Magnificent display from the right-back who worked his socks off on the wing. Yedlin’s pace caused problems all afternoon from his ability to beat defenders, put crosses in or stop crosses from entering is penalty area. Yedlin also made a brilliant goal-line clearance in the dying minutes of the game.

Grant Hanley 7 – He didn’t have an outstanding game but for the majority, he did his job and is showing he is a better player than the axed Jamaal Lascelles.

Ciaran Clark 8 – The Republic of Ireland international produced a solid display against Derby and kept striker Darren Bent at bay. He came out to clear any danger and dealt with any crosses from the wide men.

Paul Dummett 6 – Much better performance from the left-back, but still needs to do more going forward. Dealt with winger Tom Ince really well.

Matt Ritchie 9 – The former Premier League player was a constant threat throughout the match. Whenever Ritchie gets on the ball, he makes something happen, from producing a well-timed cross to testing the goalkeeper from long range. He is always an attacking threat for his side.

Jonjo Shelvey 9 – It is not hard to see why Shelvey is the best player in Rafa Benitez’ squad. There is no doubt he has the best passing ability in the league and his ability to see passes other players don’t makes a huge difference for his side.

Isaac Hayden 6 – Played a simple game in midfield, passed the ball well and put his foot in when needed. He was substituted straight after the break with a possible injury. Still needs to do more.

Yoan Gouffran 5 – Had a quiet game and really needs to do more in the final third for his side. As a senior a player he simply needs to produce better performances.

Mo Diame 8 – The Magpies’ first-half display played a huge part in them picking up three points and Diame played a huge part in that. He constantly ran at defenders and produced efforts on goal.

Aleksander Mitrovic 7 – The 22-year-old should have got on the scoresheet in the second half, but his hold up play was brilliant. This was displayed when Ritchie opened the scoring in the first half.
