Newcastle to open Anthony Gordon talks, release clause news – sources
Newcastle United are set to hold talks with Anthony Gordon over the offer of a new long-term contract, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that, despite reports to the contrary, Newcastle are reluctant to entertain the possibility of a release clause in any new deal.
With two years left on his current contract, the 23-year-old remains a crucial part of Eddie Howe’s squad and the boss is keen to ensure that remains the case.
Keeping Gordon, as well as Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes, at the club had been a priority during the transfer window, and the club are now looking to strengthen their position.
Supporters at St James’ Park had expressed concerns that his head may have been turned by the links to his boyhood club, but sources say that is not the case.
Despite links with a move to Liverpool in the summer, Gordon remains focused on playing for Newcastle and there is a willingness to reach an agreement over a new contract.
Newcastle United to hand Anthony Gordon bumper deal after Liverpool speculation
Gordon has suffered a slow start to the season at St James’ Park after returning from England’s disappointing end to their Euro 2024 campaign.
Despite having scored in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, he has struggled to maintain consistently impressive displays in the first three league games.
This had led to suggestions that his head may be elsewhere after a turbulent summer with transfer rumours surrounding the winger.
However, Newcastle are keen to squash those concerns with the offer of a bumper new deal which would see him extend his stay at St James’ Park.
Last season’s impressive form saw Gordon bag 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League, rising to 12 and 11 respectively across all competitions.
This has made him one of the most important players in Howe’s team and earned him a call-up ahead of Euro 2024 – despite his lack of minutes at the tournament.

Now, with two years left on his deal and the likes of Liverpool keeping a close eye on his progress, the Magpies are desperate to strengthen their negotiating position.
Official talks are expected to begin in the near future, with a feeling on both sides that an agreement can be reached.
