Newcastle United work on signing defensive duo – sources
Newcastle United are eyeing AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw and Fikayo Tomori as defensive transfer targets this summer.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Thiaw is firmly on the Toon club’s radar.
Despite being in and out of the AC Milan team, the young defender has developed a good reputation and would tick many boxes for Newcastle.
The Italian giants are keen not to lose Thiaw in this window, but he could be prized away if the right offer was made.
The Magpies have been in talks with Milan about possibly of signing him, but the club are also considering Tomori.
Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Newcastle have registered their interest in Tomori.
Tomori has thrived in Italy since leaving Chelsea, but he would be a more expensive option than Thiaw.
The 26-year-old could be open to a return to England for the next stage of his career after his reputation has been enhanced while playing in Serie A, according to sources.
Newcastle United need defensive cover due to injuries
Football Insider revealed that Newcastle are preparing to make “big-money moves” this summer, with central defence being a key area for Eddie Howe.
The Magpies will be without Jamal Lascelles and Sven Botman until 2025 due to injury, which is why the club want a defender in the door this summer.
The club would prefer to bring in a young player that Howe could then develop moving forward, as has been the policy since this project began.
Newcastle are also in the market for a striker this summer, and they have been monitoring Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
