“It doesn’t always go well”: PL chief makes big admission about Newcastle

By Matt Farr

Burnley manager Sean Dyche fears his side could struggle to compete with newly-promoted Newcastle United in the Premier League next season.

Newcastle earned an immediate return to the top-flight after winning the Championship title during the 2016-17 season, while Burnley avoided relegation to retain their own Premier League status.

The Magpies are likely to splash the cash on new recruits this summer, after manager Rafa Benitez was handed the full backing of mega-rich owner Mike Ashley.

They have already spent a reported £6.2million to sign Chelsea attacker Christian Atsu, but Benitez will continue to flex the club’s financial muscle in the coming months to prepare his side for their upcoming battle.

However, Dyche admits that his side don’t have the financial power of their promoted rivals, which could see them lose out in the fight to stay in the division next season.

He told the Lancashire Telegraph: “Newcastle are coming up, we’re not going to catch them, they’ve got the owner’s money, same with Brighton. So two of the three coming up are going to be above us immediately financially.

“A fan said to me ‘we’re the same as Newcastle now, because we get the same TV money.’ They’ve got a fella behind them who is a billionaire, on 50,000 attendances and all the corporate and shirt sales.

“We can’t go here’s £100million, go and spend it all. It doesn’t always go well.”

Burnley’s current transfer record stands at the £13million signing of Republic of Ireland winger Robbie Brady during the January transfer window.

Newcastle’s record transfer, meanwhile, was completed back in 2005-06, when they signed Michael Owen from Real Madrid for £17million, and they have since regularly spent upwards of £10million on individual players.

Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle both arrived at St. James’ Park last summer in eight-figure deals, while the club spent more than £10million on five individual players a year earlier.

In other Newcastle news, the club have reportedly been offered a deal to sign this top-flight captain.
