Valuation of 26-year-old PL midfielder scaring Newcastle away – report

By Harvey Byrne

Newcastle are named as three clubs being scared away by Everton’s price-tag put on midfielder James McCarthy, according to a report.

The Mirror have claimed on their live transfer blog (Sunday) that the Toffees have placed a £25million valuation on the 26-year-old Republic of Ireland international.

However, a number of clubs are reluctant to meet those demands and it is said that the Magpies, West Brom and Leicester all value McCarthy at £15million.

The player’s “camp” are also said to have been left stunned after being told how much Everton are asking for McCarthy.

The Irishman had an injury plagued last campaign which limited him to just 12 Premier League matches in Ronald Koeman’s debut campaign.

The club have also added Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye to their midfield ranks in the past year, while Tom Davies has also stepped up from the youth team and when fit McCarthy may even struggle to get back into the first team.

But, he does still have three years remaining on his contract at the club, meaning Everton have the strength in negotiations.

Football Insider verdict:

Everton have splashed out big fees themselves this summer, but other clubs are still reluctant to get involved in the price inflation. McCarthy would certainly be an example of being over-priced, with the player who joined Everton back in 2013 for 13million showing nothing that would make him a £25million player. It is felt that the Toffees must now lower their asking price if they are to part ways with the Irishman this summer. However, the transfer window can also be unpredictable at times and if Everton do manage to receive as much as £25million for McCarthy then he could be one of the best pieces of business the club conduct this summer.
