‘Rangers is toxic’ – Everyone avoiding manager’s job after ‘behind-the-scenes’ reveal

Rangers are having an extremely difficult time appointing a new manager after a number of rejections.

Steven Gerrard looked set to be the new man in the Ibrox dugout, but the former Liverpool midfielder has now ruled himself out of the running.

It comes after another candidate, Sean Dyche, also rejected the opportunity to take the Rangers job.

Russell Martin was dismissed by the Glasgow giants on Sunday (5 October) evening, but the club are still no closer to finding a replacement.

Rangers have themselves to blame for manager chaos

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Rangers have put themselves in a very difficult position after sacking Martin.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the managerial position at Ibrox has started to become an “unwanted job”, due to the actions of the owners.

Rangers are searching for their fourth boss of 2025, following the reigns of Martin, Barry Ferguson and Philippe Clement

Wyness added that the chaos behind the scenes and long-term issues make the Scottish giants a difficult club to manage.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Rangers have got themselves into a very, very difficult position because it soon starts to become a difficult, unwanted job.

“There is a lot going on behind the scenes there that isn’t good, so it’s a difficult place to come into. But any manager who comes in will now feel that they can always blame Russell and the group before, so they’ve got a ready-made excuse.

“It just shows us once again, Rangers right now is a very toxic club, and it’s not setting itself up in terms of recognising what its problems are, and those are long-term issues that have got to be resolved sensibly.

“There isn’t a quick fix in football when a club is in this sort of position. I’d caution the Rangers fans to start thinking, knee-jerk reactions are not the way forward. You’ve got to start rebuilding the foundations. And that doesn’t happen in five or six weeks.”

Rangers set sights on new manager option

With Dyche and Gerrard both now out of the running, Rangers are moving on to other options.

One name that has consistently popped up is Danny Rohl, former Sheffield Wednesday manager, who has been out of work since he left the Owls in the summer.

Rohl has reportedly wowed the Rangers hierarchy during his interview, with the likes of Andrew Cavenagh, Paraag Marathe and Kevin Thelwell all impressed.

The 36-year-old is now the favourite to take over at Ibrox among the bookies.
