If Rangers star is a ‘diddy’ then Scottish football is dead in the water
COMMENT
Since arriving in Scotland, Rangers star Alfredo Morelos has outscored every other player in the Scottish Premiership yet for some inexplicable reason, for some that makes the striker a “diddy.”
Whether you support Rangers, Celtic or anyone else, the suggestion that a 21-year-old in a new country where he doesn’t speak the language is a “diddy” for missing two chances in an Old Firm derby against a side who have swept all before them domestically over the last 18 months is stupid, at best.
Scottish Sun journalist Bill Leckie’s claim that Rangers fans were cheering Morelos’ late substitution at Celtic Park because “he might be a diddy, but he’s our diddy” smacks of the same horrendous tone that some in the media used towards Pedro Caixinha while he was in the hotseat – if he’s not one of us, he is to be viewed with suspicion.
Morelos has, in his first 20 league games for the Gers outscored Celtic star Moussa Dembele after his opening 20 league games for the Hoops yet 12 months ago, certain sections in the media claimed the Frenchman was worth £50million.
Had Morelos been a Scottish-born striker, there would be demands for him to be fast-tracked into the Scotland side and almost certainly have him tagged as the great white hope of Scottish football.
Perhaps something has changed in Scottish football in the last 12 months but if a 21-year-old topping the goalscoring charts is a “diddy” then Scottish football is dead in the water.
