Rangers first teamer makes admission about Celtic 20-year-old

By Harvey Byrne

Rangers first team left-back Declan John has made the admission that young Celtic attacker Patrick Roberts “did quite well” in Scotland last season.

The fierce Glasgow rivals are preparing to go head to head for the first time this season with a Premiership clash coming up on Saturday afternoon at Ibrox.

It could mark John’s first appearance in the exciting encounter after the 22-year-old made the switch from Cardiff to the Gers on a loan deal this summer.

Meanwhile, Roberts has already gained experience of the Old Firm derby after initially joining Celtic on loan from Manchester City in January 2016 and John has admitted so far the 20-year-old has been a success in Scotland

“I have seen him play before and he did quite well last season. We will just have to wait and see on Saturday,” told John, as quoted by the Evening Times.

“At the end of the day, when you are playing in the Premier League at 17, 18 years of age, you are coming up against all these good players.

“It did take some time getting used to but I have come up against good players in my time. I am not really going to fear anyone that I play against.”

John and Roberts could face each other on Saturday with the defender a left-back, while the young City attacker has been known to favour the right side of the pitch.

Both of the young duo will be looking to impress at Ibrox and over the whole season with Roberts expected to return to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester club, while John is likely to make his way back to Wales with Cardiff.

However, for now their focus will be on the upcoming fixture with five points currently separating the two Glasgow clubs in the league table with Celtic in first, while Rangers sit in third.
