Rangers war of words with SPFL needs to end soon as Gerrard revolution kicks off

COMMENT

Rangers chairman Dave King escalated his war of words with the SPFL on Wednesday when he called chairman Murdoch MacLennan “not fit for purpose” – but the Gers chairman needs to have an end in sight and not allow it to drag on as Steven Gerrard’s Rangers revolution gets underway.

King, as quoted by Radio Clyde, launched the astonishing blast over the SPFL’s response his demand for an investigation into the business relationship between MacLennan and Celtic’s Dermot Desmond.

While King is absolutely right to be demanding an explanation into a perceived conflict of interest in the SPFL boardroom, going to war with the football authorities as Gerrard gets to work could end up doing more harm than good for the Gers.

After his comments, it wouldn’t be a shock to see King and the Gers both hauled up before the Scottish FA’s disciplinary committee for some reason or another as they try to get their pound of flesh from King.

The SFA have already kicked off proceedings over an alleged rule breach in 2010/11 – which has likely prompted King’s recent statements – with the Light Blues facing an enormous range of sanctions if found guilty.

The Gers could find themselves subject to a transfer ban or even exclusion from the Scottish Cup over the existing SFA charges and the Ibrox chairman’s comments won’t do much to endear him to the blazers at Hampden – with lots of crossover between the SPFL and SFA committees.

After some of the treatment the Gers have already come in for, heavy sanctions for minor infractions won’t come as a surprise to many Rangers fans.

The publicity that comes with the ongoing row – and a perception that the Gers are at war’ with the authorities in Scotland – won’t do them many favours either when it comes to trying to recruiting Gerrard’s targets as he looks to end Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football.

King needs, and deserves, answers to the demands he has made but the longer it drags on, the more risk it poses to the Gers and Steven Gerrard’s hopes of immediate success.
