Report details Newcastle decision on 25-year-old Arsenal player
By Harvey Byrne
Newcastle have decided to drop their interest in Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson this summer, according to a report.
The Daily Mail have claimed on their website that the signing of right-back Javier Maquillo means they will not continue in their pursuit of the Gunners 25-year-old and that they have left Premier League duo Swansea and Brighton in the race for him.
The report follows claims from ESPN FC stating earlier in the month that the Magpies were one of a host of clubs said to be eyeing a move for the one-time capped England international.
However, the addition of Manquillo means that the Magpies now have three right-backs in their squad with DeAndre Yedlin and Jesus Gamez already in the team.
Jenkinson himself is said to be looking for more first team football after playing just five times in all competitions for Arsenal in the last campaign and he has entered the final year of his contract in north London.
Football Insider verdict:
Jenkinson looked a bright prospect a few years a go and even impressed while on loan with West Ham. However, for whatever reason his career simply has not progressed despite being capped by England back in 2012 aged just 20. Now, he may have possibly been a better addition for the Magpies that Manquillo, who has previously failed to impress at both Liverpool and close rivals Sunderland. However, Rafa Benitez has made his decision and the Spaniard has shown through his career that he can be trusted and Newcastle fans will now be hoping that Manquillo can prove a smart signing at St. James’ Park.
In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies have been warned they will have to pay a eight-figure for Premier League attacker.
