Rangers taking huge gamble, but it could just work out thanks to Mark Allen

Rangers could be set to appoint Steven Gerrard as the club’s new manager in the summer, according to reports, and it will lead to huge structural changes within Ibrox as the Gers modernise the football department and move to a more continental structure.

According to the Evening Times, Gerrard is top of the list to take over from Graeme Murty and it appears that the Liverpool icon will fill more of a head coach role than the traditional manager position.

With director of football Mark Allen taking a more prominent role within the day-to-day running of things at Ibrox, it seems that Gerrard – or whoever does take the job – will be responsible for preparing the team from week to week while Allen takes control of everything else.

Clubs across Europe have used this sort of structure to varying degrees of success and it will hugely depend on the relationship between Allen and the head coach to make it a success.

Gerrard’s inexperience as a coach makes his potential appointment a huge gamble but with Allen taking more control it could just work out for the Gers.

The biggest hurdle they could find will be fans and former players who have a set way of how Rangers have done things in years gone by and think any deviance from that is heresy.

Whatever Rangers do this summer, Dave King and the Gers board simply can’t afford another mis-step and get as close to appointing a sure-fire winner as they can.

Whether that is Gerrard remains to be seen but it is a remarkable gamble from a board who already find themselves in the last chance saloon.
