Reported Tottenham disappointment over Celtic giant will leave Spurs fans delighted
COMMENT
There is no doubt that Tottenham’s ongoing contract wrangle with Toby Alderweireld will have left them seeking a new centre back come the summer.
Losing the big Belgian will be a massive blow considering his consistency and talent at the heart of defence, and whoever steps in to fill the gap will have massive shoes to fill.
Team Talk have claimed that their search has resulted in them heading north and keeping close tabs on Celtic’s giant defender Kristoffer Ajer, and are joined in the hunt by German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund.
The 6’4″ centre back has been a mainstay in the Hoops’ side despite being just 19-years-old, with 25 appearances under his belt, and it appears to have attracted the attention of some big hitters.
However, the report states that Spurs are set to be disappointed over their pursuit, with Dortmund said to be leading the charge, and ready to hand the Scottish champions a massive profit on a man they secured for just £500,000 in 2016.
In reality though, the club’s disappointment will not be matched by the fans, who will no doubt be hoping for a higher quality of player than the Norwegian international if Alderweireld does leave.
His age would not be an issue – fans warmly took in 21-year-old Davinson Sanchez last summer – but considering Ajer has not been playing at a truly competitive level up in Scotland, much more would be expected as a replacement.
Really, they need to be looking either in England – the likes of Alfie Mawson and Jamaal Lascelles from Swansea and Newcastle are two potential names – or at some top clubs abroad.
Either way, the Tottenham faithful will be delighted to see Dortmund beating their club to the Hoops youngster – their ambitions will be much higher.
