Robert Sanchez shares Chelsea training ground update after he’s axed

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez took to social media to share a training ground update after he was dropped by Enzo Maresca.

The 27-year-old was axed for Chelsea’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to former club Brighton after a string of high-profile mistakes between the sticks.

No player has made more errors leading to goals than Sanchez (five), tied with Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric as Chelsea have fallen out of the Champions League qualification spots.

Football Insider revealed (February 18) that Enzo Maresca’s side retains an interest in Liverpool ‘keeper Caoimhin Kelleher and are willing to meet their asking price to secure his services.

Chelsea are making a decision over sacking Maresca after their downward spiral continued with last Friday’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton.

Sanchez had been Chelsea’s number one throughout the first half of the season, starting all 22 of his games across all competitions, conceding 29 goals, and keeping just four clean sheets.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League defeat to Brighton, Maresca said: “I said that the Filip solution (against West Ham) was also to give Robert some time to recover mentally and physically.

“The idea is not to game by game change the keeper. In this moment, the last Premier League game against West Ham that we won was Filip… the FA Cup game was Robert, but our keeper in this moment is Filip.”

Maresca’s decision to drop Sanchez will likely be music to the ears of Chelsea fans who have seemingly lost faith in the ‘keeper, with many demanding the club sell him.

Sanchez took to Instagram to share an image of himself training hard ahead of their crucial Premier League clash with Aston Villa on Saturday (February 22).

Chelsea remain within touching distance of the Champions League spots, one point off Man City in fourth with 43 from their 25 games.

Maresca’s side will face relegation-threatened Leicester after the game with Villa before facing London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham in the two after.
