Rodon tipped to dazzle for Newcastle after source update on January move – pundit

The January capture of Joe Rodon would improve the Newcastle defence, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old’s international experience with Wales will be valuable to the relegation strugglers.

This site revealed earlier this month (4 December) the Wales international has his heart set on leaving Spurs.

A Tottenham source told Football Insider yesterday (26 December) that Newcastle lead the race to sign the defender in next month’s window.

Whelan insisted the Toon Army will be pleased to see the Magpies hierarchy address their defensive problems in January.

“He would come in and improve that defence,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s a very good young, international player. We’ve seen him do a good job for Wales, even if he’s not starting for Tottenham.

“We saw him at Swansea, he was one of those standout performers in the Championship that season.

“He’s the right age, he’s got that ability to come in and play well when needed as we’ve seen at Spurs, he looks fit, and he can be a leader.

“He’ll help Newcastle, no doubt, because they’re in desperate need of options right now. They need experience, and Rodon has got that international experience – it’d be a big boost for that backline.

“I think the Newcastle fans will be happy to see him coming in because centre-half has been where their weaknesses have been.”

Rodon has played just 78 minutes for Tottenham in the Premier League this term.

Newcastle

Newcastle have conceded the most goals in the top flight this season, shipping 41 in 18 games.

Rodon has played 22 times for Wales, including at last summer’s (2021) Euro 2020 tournament.
