International confirms he wants Rangers summer deal

Rangers defender Russell Martin has confirmed he wants to make his loan switch from Norwich City permanent in the summer – and admits he is “enjoying everything” about his spell in Glasgow.

The 32-year-old joined the Light Blues in January and has been a mainstay in the starting XI since his move north.

Since arriving at Ibrox, Martin has quickly won over fans and earned himself a recall to the Scotland squad – although withdrew on Sunday night with a back injury.

The former Norwich captain revealed he had “made it known” he wants to stay at Ibrox beyond the summer but admits he will need to keep performing well to make it happen.

“I’ve made it known I want to stay so I will have to keep doing well enough to make sure that happens,” Martin said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“I want to be here and there’s still a lot to play for. We have the cup and we need to finish second in the league, it’s as simple as that.

“We need to try to haul the points back, and I’m enjoying everything about being at the football club.”

Martin was one of five new faces to join Graeme Murty’s squad in the January transfer window, with agreements already in place to sign fellow loanees Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings at the end of the season.

The Scotland international has made nine appearances for the Light Blues following his move and played 90 minutes of Saturday’s Scottish Premiership defeat by Kilmarnock.

Football Insider verdict:

Rangers director of football Mark Allen will almost certainly need to add at least a couple of central defenders to the Gers ranks in the summer and Martin has probably just propelled himself into pole position, The 32-year-old has done well since joining the Gers although has picked up a couple of niggly injuries already which could give some concern to the Ibrox management. With Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves possibly on their way out the door in the summer, the Gers need to get their recruitment spot on over the close season.

In other Rangers news, fans have demanded that the club signs this Old Firm scourge in the summer, claiming he is better than Celtic’s Olivier Ntcham.
