Sources: Rennes and Borussia Monchengladbach in race to sign Hull City star Wilks

Borussia Monchengladbach and Rennes are racing to sign Hull City forward Mallik Wilks, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The French and German clubs are long-time admirers of the ex-Leeds United star and have been following him for some time.

An industry source has told Football Insider that Mochengladbach and Rennes are planning to table bids for Wilks and test Hull’s resolve to keep him.

The 22-year-old is in the final year of his contract and clubs at home and abroad are monitoring his situation at the MKM Stadium.

Wilks, who came through the ranks at Leeds, impressed at Hull last season as he spearheaded their promotion to the Championship by winning League One.

The versatile forward scored 22 goals and provided nine assists from 50 matches in all competitions.

Football Insider revealed on May 18 his form had attracted the attention of Premier League duo Newcastle United and Crystal Palace.

With just a year left on his deal, Wilks could negotiate a pre-contract deal with foreign clubs in January if he does not commit to fresh terms.

He moved to Hull City from Barnsley, initially on loan, in January 2020 before the move was made permanent that summer.

The Englishman has not featured for the Tigers this season since suffering an injury in the opening day hammering of Preston North End.

He was forced off in the 80th minute of City’s 4-1 win with a calf injury after a challenge from North End skipper Alan Browne.

In other news, West Brom have opened talks to sign a Brighton & Hove Albion star.
