Summer signing will be key man for Rangers in second-half of season

COMMENT

Portuguese winger Daniel Candeias had arguably his best match for Rangers since signing for the Gers in the summer from Benfica against Celtic on Saturday.

And if the 29-year-old can maintain that level of performance he will be a key player for Graeme Murty’s side in the second-half of the Scottish Premiership campaign.

Candeias put in a disciplined display on the right along with James Tavernier as they nullified Scott Sinclair and Kieran Tierney as the Old Firm giants went head-to-head for the second time this season.

The former Benfica winger has found himself in and out of the side in recent weeks as the Gers move between a narrow diamond midfield and playing with two wingers.

If Candeias can consistently put in the type of performances he did against Brendan Rodgers’ side on Saturday, the 29-year-old will make it almost impossible for Graeme Murty to axe him from his starting XI.

Candeais has already built up a good rapport with James Tavernier and has contributed regularly with assists despite his performances sometimes being a little bit off but his showing against Celtic proved just how effective a player he can be in Murty’s side.

While it’s clear that Rangers need to bring in some new faces in the January transfer window, a replacement for Candeias on the right wing should be well down the Gers’ list of targets.
