‘One of those things’ – Tavernier backs Rangers team-mate after draw v Celtic

Rangers defender James Tavernier has admitted that Alfredo Morelos’ blank against Celtic is “one of those things” that can happen in football.

Morelos had a few really good chances to break the deadlock at Celtic Park but was denied by a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Craig Gordon.

The Colombian is the top goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership this season and has shown a great eye for goal but just couldn’t find a way past the Celtic defence in the 0-0 draw.

Tavernier recalled the last trip to Celtic Park when former Gers striker Marty Waghorn missed two chances to score and admitted that strikers “will miss chances.”

“Strikers will miss chances,” Tavernier said as quoted by BT Sport.

“I remember the last time we came here Waggy (Martyn Waghorn) missed two chances, it’s just one of those things.

“Alfredo is a good lad and will move forward from this. We didn’t come away losing, we came away with a point. We’re obviously a little bit disappointed we didn’t win the game.”

Morelos joined the Gers in the summer from Finnish side HJK Helsinki and has scored ten times in 20 appearances in the Scottish Premiership to top the scoring charts.

Tavernier was a stand out in the Old Firm clash after a brilliant performance both defensively and offensively.

The right-back joined the Gers from Wigan in 2015 and has lifted the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup in his time at Ibrox.

Tavernier has made 121 appearances for the Ibrox giants since his move north under Mark Warburton.
