Tottenham player rebuffed deadline day offer from PL side – report
By Aramide Oladipo
Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen rejected the opportunity to secure a deadline day move to fellow Premier League side Brighton, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the newly-promoted Premier League team were keen on signing the 23-year-old on a loan deal on the final day of the transfer window but the player rebuffed the offer.
The same newspaper also reported that Janssen was also attracting interest from Stoke City, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion this past Thursday.
The forward has decided to continue his spell with the North London club and he is now set to compete with new summer signing Fernando Llorente for a place up top with talisman Harry Kane this season.
Janssen featured for over an hour for the Netherlands national team on Thursday evening as they suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat against France in a crucial World Cup qualifier.
The striker will be hopeful that he can improve on last season’s form with Spurs where he failed to make the desired impact and only contributed with six goals in all competitions.
The Dutchman’s current contract with Spurs runs out in 2020.
Football Insider verdict
Although Janssen would have been guaranteed regular first-team action at Brighton, he has probably made the right decision to stay and fight for his place at Spurs this season. The striker will surely prefer the chance to compete in the Champions League this season rather than struggle in a team who will be fighting against relegation throughout the campaign. The fact that Janssen is still starting for the national team despite his lack of first-team opportunities with his club shows that a move is not exactly necessary in order to enhance his international career. The striker will now need to step up his game following the arrival of Llorente and prove to his manager that he deserves to be given a second chance at the club.
